Own Your Craft

By January 5, 2024January 10th, 2024Culture

Every year, we are intentional about reflecting on our company culture and how we align with our core values – both personally and professionally. Our core values are held dear to us, and every month we pass core value trophies to our coworkers who have demonstrated them in the workplace. We realized that one of our core values, “Own Your Mess,” was starting to lose its impact. This core value was created because Highpoint encourages failing forward or being honest and learning from your mistakes. However, it slowly began to be represented by just taking out the trash or washing dishes in the sink. Although we have a sense of humor, it was clear that a change was needed. Our leadership took the time to brainstorm our core values and in 2024, we introduced a new one: Own Your Craft

It’s a common misconception that you need to be born gifted in order to excel in life. The reality is that, with practice and perseverance, anyone can improve their craft and become a master at it. Perfecting your craft means dedicating yourself to the mastery of your chosen skill. It means working diligently to improve your abilities, learning from your mistakes, and striving for excellence. It means becoming the best you can be so that you can create the best work possible. It takes time and effort to perfect your craft, but the rewards are worth it.

Great examples of this are right here under our roof. One employee started out as a specialist 5 years ago. Since then, she has spent time and energy learning about claims management, including earning specialty claims designations. She now leads our claims department and has used her knowledge to coach others.

Anyone can embrace this core value – it just means being the best you can be. Whether you’re a sister, brother, spouse, leader, coach, teacher, athlete, or just a friend, you can always be more intentional about improving every day. Owning your craft takes time and consistent effort, but in the long term it defines success in your role and will open doors for future opportunities.
